GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Fire Department will be putting a new ambulance into service next week and is inviting the public to view the new emergency vehicle.

WHAT:
The Gloucester Fire Department is inviting local, state and federal legislators, city officials, members of the public and media to view the city’s new ambulance. A tour will be given of the new vehicle following remarks from Chief Smith, thanking those who made the purchase of the new ambulance possible.
The ambulance replaces an old, worn vehicle and was funded by one of two Assistance to Firefighters Grants awarded to the Gloucester Fire Department this September from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grants also funded the addition of upgraded stretcher loading systems onto three of the department’s existing ambulances, which will allow firefighters to automatically lift and lower stretchers into and out of the vehicles.
“We’re incredibly thankful that the importance of updating our ambulance equipment was recognized by FEMA last fall,” Chief Smith said. “This new vehicle, coupled with the automatic stretcher loading systems, is a great improvement for patient and crew safety as we respond to medical and emergency calls around the city. Thank you to all who had a hand in making this possible.”
The grants, totaling approximately $500,000, covered the majority of the cost for the new equipment, and the city of Gloucester was responsible for the remaining $46,000.
